HOLY WEEK

The celebration of Holy Week in Malaga took on its procession format with the Reconquest of the Catholics Monarchs in 1487, after centuries of Muslim influence.

The baroque period in Malaga was the time when new processional Brotherhoods were formed by the noble families of the city, all the processional "tronos" left from their respective temples. The images were borne on rudimentary platforms and carried by 8 or 10 throne bearers.

The 19th century with the Napoleonic invasions came continued sacking of the Brotherhoods' heritage.

After the Spanish War of Independence, the Mendizabal's Disentailment Act in 1835 eliminated a large number of convents including many in Malaga. The disappearance of these convents forced the Brotherhoods to find new temples to house their images.

Nowadays the Holy Week in Malaga is very well-known among tourists from all over the world, it is considered one of the most important events in the city.

CARNIVAL

The Carnival in Spain is an old festive celebration documented since the Middle Ages and with a rich personality from the Renaissance that has been collected in Spanish literature and other arts located in the different towns that make up the Spanish State.1 As in the Rest of the world carnivals is a sum of different pagan festivals associated with Christian celebrations, in this case Lent. 2 With a more recent history and approach, the Tinerfeño and Cadiz models are internationally known. Spanish carnival party models have a special tradition on Thursday Lardero and Ash Wednesday (celebrated 46 days before Easter).

The Carnival of Cadiz is one of the most famous carnivals in Spain, so it has been recognized (together with the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the Carnival of Eagles in Murcia) with the declaration of Fiesta of International Tourist Interest (unique in Spain with such a distinction). Since 2014, the Carnival of Cadiz and the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife are twinned, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the twinning of the two cities that took place in 1984. Every year and during the months of January and February is held in the Great Theater Fails the Carnival Grouping Contest.
